In the server version the graphical interface is not installed, but if you want it is simply but will add a ton of packages 😉

About networking.
I download the image to my Mac but the Ubuntu Server can not accessed Internet.
The solution: Eth1 is the virtual net card that is working, so:
– Edit /etc/network/interfaces and replace “eth0” to “eth1”
sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces
– restart the network
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

This is an old question of “udev”: you can edit the file /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules
remove the lines of old network-card, and change to “eth0” in the appropriate MAC address, then reboot.

It’s set to it(Italian?) and that destroys the keyboard for the us layout. You have to change the layout in /etc/default/keyboard to what ever you need. then do what @emptystacks says. If like me you use the the us layout and use Vim that is total borked and once you edit you can’t ESC to tell it to save. Use pico/nano to change it.

what do you mean enable? Ubuntu server has openssh installed and listen on 22 TCP port, so if you want to access via network, you can use ssh client or putty on windows. If VirtualBox Extension Pack is installed, you can enable remote display on host machine and access via RDP (rdesktop, remmina client).

All the .7z images are compressed by 7z, often in Linux or under MacOS, whereas last images are released as OVA (Open Virtualization Format). This the best the choice for immediate import in VirtualBox.
Are you sure that image is not corrupted? Check the md5sum of downloaded image and compare with the same on sourceforce. E.g for the file ubuntu-12.10-server-i386.7z 2012-10-22 218.5 MB, md5sum report the value:

I had trouble getting the keyboard to work with my MacBook Air. Apparently the keyboard was set to the wrong layout.

Just to clarify for users (like myself). To adjust back to standard US keyboard layout, you need to…
sudo nano /etc/default/keyboardAnd set
XKBLAYOUT="us"Then CTRL+X and Y to save.
sudo dpkg-reconfigure console-setupAnd just accept most of the default options that appear on the screen.
Once it’s finished, your keyboard should work like normal. 🙂

The /etc/resolv.conf file on the 11.10 image contains the following two lines before the usual nameserver command:
domain adserv.it
search adserv.it
Why is this?

assure that Network of VM is set to bridge, verify it with command:
VBoxManage showvminfo "ubuntu-13.04-server-i386"|grep -i NICThe output show the NIC attached in bridge mode:
NIC 1: MAC: 080027AA0000, Attachment: Bridged Interface 'eth0', Cable connected: on>At this point you can connect to IP of Guest via Putty/ssh
In NAT mode you obtain an internal IP 10.0.2.15 that is not visible from external network.
